If you come into contact with a Nisse in Norway, you should follow three simple rules to avoid upsetting the tradition-conscious gnome-like creature: No bright light! No noise! No changes! Bad cards for the American family who, after the bizarre accidental death of a relative, move into his idyllic Norwegian wooden house without further ado and, in a pre-Christmas frenzy, set off with tinny singing Santa Claus figures and obtrusively flashing fairy lights. Nisse, who lives in the shed, doesn’t take kindly to such shenanigans and joins his fellow elves in the fight against the intruders from the New World. THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE BARN is a good-humored, gently satirical and occasionally quotable horror comedy somewhere between NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION (Martin Starr is the best Chevy Chase replacement) and GREMLINS, from which one learns: Norwegians drink a lot and Nisser loves chocolate cookies. We can relate.
